Choma’s 2017 Year-end Message
Wow! What a year it’s been Chomas! 2017 has been an amazing year for so many reasons but mainly because of how awesome the Choma Magazine has grown. The best part of the year was spent chatting to Chomas about everything, from relationship issues to self-love. It’s been great reading all the comments and all your questions on Choma Magazine and on social media showing how much you all have grown as individuals.
If you’ve only recently joined the Choma sisterhood or if you simply missed out on some of the milestones, here are things that happened in 2017:
Choma of the Month was launched
With all the new and awesome fans on Facebook, I felt the need to start rewarding my Chomas. Now, every month I choose someone who has made a positive impact on the Choma Facebook page - whether it’s liking the content, spreading the message by sharing the content or engaging with the content through lots of comments. The prize for Choma of the Month is a goody bag with little things from pens and sunglasses to exam pads and sanitary towels. You could just be the next Choma of the Month!
Make a Noise was launched
One of the most exciting things this year Choma, was launching Make a Noise. Make a Noise is a new section on the Choma Magazine website that was created specifically for you, and other Chomas, to make your voices heard. There is a lot going on in the world, in the country and in your community so it’s important that you have a platform where you can have your say and demand change. In the new Make a Noise section you can let everyone know what you stand against and what you stand for when it comes to the issues you see in society.
Still wondering what it is? Check out Make a Noise here.
Other important things that happened
With the #MenAreTrash, #NotInMyName and #MeToo hashtags that became a big focus this year, we witnessed a lot more women and men stand up for women’s rights. This year people came together online in a really big way. We’ve even lended our own voices to the fight against gender-based violence with the hashtag #DoneWithSilence on Make a Noise.
As a young woman it’s important that you know your rights and that you understand how worthy you are of respect, love and healthy relationships. This is a message that I will continue to promote in the hope that young South African women will always love themselves and protect themselves first. My hope for 2018 is for more self-love in every young woman!
If you’re struggling with self-love and self-esteem in any way, you can talk to me about it via Ask Choma. If you don’t know about “Ask Choma” yet: I offer advice to young women (and sometimes young men) who are looking for guidance on anything from love and relationships to sex, pregnancy and general health.
I might not be available to answer your questions during the December holidays, but I will get to them as soon as I can in January. However Choma, if you’re going through anything and need someone to speak to urgently, here are a few emergency numbers you can call or places you can contact:
Suicide Crisis Line - 0800 567 567, SMS 31393
SADAG Mental Health Line - 011 234 4837

So to wrap it up Choma, 2017 was an eventful year and I have cherished every moment with you Chomas. Here’s to setting and achieving goals and to slaying in 2018.
Have a happy holiday - remember to have fun but always prioritize your safety!
