Why volunteering and activism is awesome
You may have heard about volunteering and activism, but what are these things exactly and why should you care about them? The truth is, becoming an activist or volunteer doesn’t only help other people, it can benefit you as well! No matter who you are, you can make a difference in the world- here’s some info on why you should give these a try and how you can get involved.
What is activism?
Activism can mean many different things- usually, it involves raising awareness around a cause by using things like petitions, protests or informative campaigns. Activists want to see improvements in their community, country and even the world.
There are many benefits to becoming an activist. If you feel negative about an issue, getting involved in activism around that issue will give you a voice and help you realise that you do have the power to make a change.
You can also meet like-minded people and make friends who share your passion around a certain issue.
What is volunteering?
Volunteering means to provide a service for another person, group or organization, without payment. Volunteer work benefits charities, organisations and even just people who need help within the community (such as children, animals or the elderly).
Volunteering can help you develop skills which you may need later in life- because of this it is a great addition to your CV. Volunteering can also improve your mood by promoting goodness. It can boost your self-esteem to know you’ve achieved something and done your part in making the world better.
Much like activism, volunteering also introduces you to new people and even potential companies who may want you to work with them in future. If you become part of a volunteer group, you’re likely to make new friends.
How to get involved
When getting involved with activism or volunteer work, the possibilities are endless and there are many organisations who would love your help and support.
For volunteering work, contact members or groups in your community who organise things such as sanitary pad runs, animal shelters, charity organisations or soup kitchens.
