The Summer Body Myth
Everyone is always going on about “summer bodies”, especially now that the weather is getting warmer. But did you know that there are a few harmful (and untrue) beliefs about “summer bodies”? Here are a few of these popular myths, and the facts behind them.
Myth: There's only one type of “summer body”.
Fact: Why should only people with a specific type of body be allowed to enjoy wearing summer clothes? The truth is that everyone has a unique body type, and you can pull off a cute summer dress or swimsuit no matter what kind of body you have. Whether you’re tall, skinny, short or curvy, don’t be scared of embracing your body in summer and having fun in the sun!
Myth: You have to get in shape for summer.
Fact: While it’s not always a bad idea to motivate yourself to eat healthier and exercise, it’s not good to put unnecessary pressure on yourself to lose weight in a short period of time. If you want to get into a training routine and improve your diet, rather do it for benefits such as better health, instead of to reach a “goal weight”.
Myth: Models have great examples of “summer bodies”.
Fact: While there are some models who are honest and promote a healthy lifestyle, unfortunately many of the ones we see posing in bikinis on the beach edit their photos. That’s right- the model in the photo probably doesn’t even look like that in real life! Same goes for celebrities we see on social media. Always remember that the beautiful bodies you see in magazines and on Instagram are usually heavily edited and “photoshopped” to make them look as “perfect” as possible.
Why are these myths harmful?
Choma, these myths are very common- you’ve probably heard your friends or even your family saying them. So, why are they so harmful? The main reason is that having a specific idea of a “summer body” can make us compare ourselves to others and set unrealistic goals of what we think we should look like. We may even want to cover up or not go out in summer because we don’t think our bodies are “good enough” to be shown.
Also, we always hear about girls who fall into dangerous eating disorders or follow diets which make them weak and sick, just so that they can change the shape of their bodies. This is why it’s so important to de-bunk these myths and set the record straight- summertime is for everyone to enjoy, no matter what your shape and size.
People are beautiful in their own unique shapes and sizes, all year around. So the next time you hear someone talking about a “summer body”, you can make your own choice about what to believe, and whether or not you agree with these myths. You can even send them this article if you want to give them some food for thought! Just as long as you remember that you’re beautiful, Choma- inside and out, and all year around.
