6 things Chomas are #DoneWithSilence about
Have you ever felt like there are so many things that are going wrong with the world but you feel powerless because your voice can’t be heard? Well, this is why the #DoneWithSilence campaign was started.
A few of you Chomas have made your pledge about the issues you don’t want to be silent about anymore. Here are a few of them:
“As much as women take a stand against gender based-violence, so should men - to create an even bigger impact than it is now. Women should no longer stand for any form of abuse from men. We are stronger and much smarter than that #DoneWithSilence.” - Callyn
“I am not a dog I don't appreciate being whistled at, being called baby (what makes you think that's endearing?). It is not attractive. It makes me so uncomfortable, I feel harassed. Please stop it! Can I please walk around and not be afraid whenever I walk past men? #DoneWithSilence” - Nomvula
We Are Not Public Property
“I'm tired of walking in the street with the fear of being raped. I’m tired of my body because I'm a woman being treated like a sex toy by men out there who think it’s alright to invade a woman’s privacy and rights by raping them. I, as a woman, want to say to all men and women that WOMEN ARE NOT AND WILL NOT BE TREATED AS PUBLIC PROPERTY #DoneWithSilence.” - Shannon
Males seem more superior than females
Girls are made to feel inferior compared to males. Girls are subjected to certain types of jobs (even today in the 21st century this is still happening) and why is it that certain things can be done by males but not females?
“Why do we judge females who propose but praise the male when he does? Why is it that girls should be ashamed of not being virgins and males are yet again praised? I believe in equality for both genders less judging towards females and more support#DoneWithSilence. ” - Nonto
Keep a girl in class
“Sanitary Pads shouldn't be a luxury. A school girl shouldn't have to worry about where she’s going to get her next pack from - they should be offered for free to school girls who can’t afford them nationwide. Their focus should be on education, not missing school because of the lack of sanitary pads #DoneWithSilence.” - Thobile
“Lately, I've been seeing many people lighten their skin just to please others and they are also afraid to show their real hair by covering it with caps and head-wraps. You shouldn’t be afraid to show your natural beauty, and sometimes you should just rock your natural face with no makeup because you still look fabulous #DoneWithSilence. ” - Tsogang
As you can see Choma, others have already started using their voices to speak up against the injustices that they feel need to be addressed. What are you waiting for? Be part of the conversation by speaking up about something you’re #DoneWithSilence in social media, using the #DoneWithSilence hashtag.
