4 ways to avoid vaginal infections

Vaginal infections are nothing to be ashamed of because they’re quite common. They can be uncomfortable and embarrassing if you don’t know what to do to treat them. But don’t worry, I have some tips on how you can avoid vaginal infections.

What causes vaginal infections?

Vaginal infections can have several causes. If you develop a vaginal infection, go to your nearest clinic so that you can be diagnosed and treated for your infection based on its cause.

Common causes of vaginal infections include:

Bacterial infections: Your vagina has natural bacteria that helps it stay healthy and regulated. Sometimes, when we use certain soaps or experience hormonal changes, there may be an overgrowth of this bacteria, which leads to an infection.

Yeast infections: Yeast infections are usually caused by a fungus called Candida albicans. Many things, including antibiotics, can reduce the number of anti-fungal bacteria in your vagina. This reduction can lead to an overgrowth of fungi and cause an infection.

Trichomoniasis (Trich): This vaginal infection is caused by a parasite that can be contracted during unprotected sex with your partner.

Here are 4 ways you can avoid vaginal infections:

Practise good personal hygiene: Make sure you wipe from front to back after going to the bathroom to prevent bacteria from the anus travelling to the vagina. Also make sure you clean your vulvar (outer part of your vagina) daily with water and a clean cloth.

Keep yourself dry and clean: Wipe yourself dry after a bath or shower. Change out of your sweaty clothes or wet swimsuit as soon as you can. Don’t repeat underwear!

Avoid perfumed deodorant sprays, scented tampons and vaginal douches: These may affect the delicate balance of yeast and bacteria in the vagina and cause yeast infections. Your vagina was not created to smell like roses, its natural smell is a sign that you are healthy and clean.

Keeping your vagina healthy is really important. Discharge that’s clear and doesn’t have a bad smell is normal, you don’t need to worry about it. If you’re experiencing symptoms you’re not sure about, don’t hesitate to go see a healthcare provider as soon as possible. For more information on vaginal health, you can read this article.
