Have you ever noticed how tired you get during the exam season? This is called exam fatigue and it happens due to the high levels of physical and mental stress that you experience during your exams. Here’s what causes exam fatigue.
Pressure
Regardless of how well you do during the year, there’s always some pressure to perform better than the previous term or semester. During this time, your mind and body gets hyper-stimulated by the fight or flight hormone which gives you an adrenaline rush. When the adrenaline wears off, your body goes into recovery mode and that’s why you feel so exhausted.
Intense Studying
When you’re preparing for your exams, the level of intensity increases which can also be draining to your overall wellbeing. For instance, you may increase the time you usually spend studying so you can catch up as quick as you can – and that can be exhausting.
Unhealthy eating
Exam anxiety makes it easy for anyone to eat a lot of junk food. Believe it or not, unhealthy eating also contributes to fatigue and that’s why it’s important to eat as many brain-boosting foods as you can so you don’t get too tired and lazy to study.
Dehydration
Many people spend a lot of time drinking things like coffee and energy drinks instead of drinking enough water. As soon as you feel thirsty, you’ve already lost approximately 2 to 3 percent of your body fluid. You might not think much of it, but this can make you feel tired and weak.
Not enough sleep
Your parents and teachers might always be on your case about sleeping for 8 hours each day but they’re actually right. Your body and mind need enough rest before any intense activity – like writing exams. Regardless of whether you might feel ready for the exam or not, it’s important to get enough sleep.
Even though this time of the year can be quite stressful because of all the studying and excess caffeine, it’s important to keep calm and not let exam stress get the better of you. All you have to do is prepare thoroughly. You can also read this article for more advice on what you shouldn’t do during the exams
