5 things you can do to fight gender inequality

Gender inequality can be a difficult topic to understand, but it’s basically the idea that women and men are not treated equally. This leads to imbalances between genders and as a result, women end up at a disadvantage in a lot of areas. Here are a few small things you can do to contribute to changing this.

Get clued up about gender stereotypes

Gender stereotypes are generalised views or ideas about women and men that usually limit their career development, ability to make choices and how they live their lives. While statements like, “girls are just better at cleaning” or “boys don’t cry” may seem like jokes, they actually promote the idea that women and men are not equal.

In order to avoid thinking and behaving according to these gender stereotypes, you’ll need to be aware of them and take steps to educate yourself about your rights.  When you know more about your rights, you’ll be able to reject or challenge these stereotypes with your loved ones, including your partner.

Accept and love your body

The problem with gender inequality’s that women are constantly told what beauty standards to strive for. This shouldn’t be the case. Remember that we’re all created differently and that’s okay. Stay away from people and social pages that promote body shaming, slut-shaming and discrimination.  Instead, celebrate your body and teach your friends to do the same. Don’t allow your anyone to control how you see yourself.

Call people out

Don’t be afraid to call your friends, partner or even family members out on their gender discrimination. The best way to do this is to point out what they did and why it’s wrong. Educate your loved ones about gender inequality and how it disempowers women. Understand that some people may reject what you say and that’s fine. It’s also okay to let them know that you’re not in support of their views.

Lead by example

If you want to see an end to gender inequality, you have to do things that end it. Remember that your actions can inspire others to join in. So it’s really important that you pay attention to what you say and do, and make sure you respect other people’s genders and rights.

Include men in the conversations

Don’t be afraid to invite your male friends in conversations about gender issues. Remember that gender inequality’s a system and males need to be aware of it in order for us to end it. It’s also an opportunity to encourage men to become supporters in the women’s rights movement and to become allies for people who don’t identify as male or female.

These are just a few guidelines to help you fight gender inequality in your immediate environment. If you come across other things that you can do then that’s great! Do them and share them with other Chomas. You can also share your #DoneWithSilence story with me on social media.
