5 Ways to protect your heart in a relationship

Being in a relationship, especially if it’s new, can be exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time because you’re trusting someone with your heart while hoping that they don’t hurt you. I know heartbreak isn’t guaranteed, but here are 5 ways to protect your heart in a relationship:

Know your boundaries

Boundaries in a relationship are basically limits you set for what someone can and cannot do. Setting boundaries in a relationship is important. Doing this will help you and your partner know which lines not to cross. Also, this is a good way to establish what you and your partner are comfortable with.

Never settle

Being in love with someone can make you excuse a lot of your partner’s problematic behaviour because you’d want to always give them the benefit of the doubt. But the truth is, you can’t completely let your guard down. You should always trust your instinct and never settle for less than what you deserve.

Know your rights

Each one of us has rights, even when you’re in a relationship. Don’t let your partner convince you that being in a relationship means your rights don’t apply anymore. Read here to learn what your rights are in a relationship.

Don’t rush things

Many people make the mistake of rushing things in a relationship. Make sure you take your time to know your partner and give the relationship an honest chance to grow naturally- at its own pace.

Set room for disappointment

Nobody gets in a relationship expecting to be heartbroken but the truth is, you don’t have control over what the next person does so it’s better to always leave room for disappointment.

Love is a beautiful journey when it’s done right. Each and every one of us – including you – deserves to experience , and even though heartbreak is inevitable – it’s always better to be alert and aware. Remember, your happiness matters the most and always put yourself and your heart first, no matter what.
