Am I at risk of COVID-19 infection as a young person?

COVID-19 has affected us all in some way or another. Whether you’re young or not, the healthiest people can still get infected with COVID-19. Here are some things that can put you at risk of COVID-19 infection.

Not wearing a mask

Masks are an important tool for stopping the spread of COVID-19. It’s crucial to wear a mask all the times when you’re in the company of others, whether you are indoors or outdoors. The World Health Organization advises the following:

Wear a mask that best suits your face.

Make sure your mask covers the mouth, nose, and chin, leaving no gaps on the sides.

Don’t touch your face or mask with dirty/unwashed hands.

Inspect the mask for tears or holes and don’t use a mask that’s damaged.

Avoid touching the mask while wearing it.

Regularly change or wash your mask if using a cloth mask.

Avoid re-using disposable masks.

Attending social gatherings

Social gatherings are one of the main ways COVID-19 spreads. This is because it takes just one person to pass the infection to many at the gathering. Did you know more than 30% of infected patients have no symptoms? Even if you don’t feel sick, you can still have the virus and spread it.

Remember Choma, it’s okay to say no when friends ask you to go out. If you must meet up with people for valid reasons such as a funeral, make safer choices by keeping it small, short, and outside.

No boundaries at work/school

Creating boundaries at work, school and home is important, especially if you’re around people who don’t follow the COVID-19 regulations. This can be done by making sure that everyone around you wears a mask, and you all practice social distancing, making sure that windows/doors are open for good ventilation. You should also try to avoid sharing food.

Information about COVID-19 is available everywhere, at schools/workplace, social media, malls, on radio and so on. Applying the regulations set before us will help save lives. If you or someone around you feels they have symptoms of COVID-19, it’s important to isolate as soon as possible to avoid further transmissions.

Remember that COVID-19 can infect anyone, which is why we should all take the necessary safety precautions by staying home and following the regulations. We should also be supportive and kind towards loved ones who’re infected by this virus.
