Why you should donate blood

The thought of donating blood can sound scary, but did you know that donating your blood can save millions of lives? Here’s some reasons why you should consider donating blood.

Blood saves lives

Every unit of blood donated can save the lives of up to 3 recipients.

There’s no substitute

There’s no known substitute for blood and it can’t be replicated due to its complexity, therefore donating blood is seen as a heroic act.

Blood is in short supply

While 75% of our population are potential recipients, less than 1.5% are donors.

It’s a good cause

The gift of giving doesn’t get much better than this. All it takes is 30 minutes of your time every 6 weeks.

The process is safe and quick

Sterile, disposable equipment is always used, so there’s no risk of infection. The entire process takes just 30 minutes, after which you can resume your daily activities.

What to expect at the donation site

Step 1

You will be asked to read some information, sign some forms and show some identification.

Step 2

You will be required to answer some health screening questions (in a private cubicle), followed by an iron/sugar test and blood pressure. If you tick all the boxes, you will be taken to a section where you'll be seated comfortably while a pint of blood is drawn. The actual donation only takes 8-10 minutes.

Step 3

Your blood is tested and sent to a patient in need.

Step 4

After donating, you’ll be given a snack and a drink and be encouraged to wait for 10-15 minutes before resuming your day.

Requirements

  • You are between 16 and 75 years old
  • You weigh at least 50kg
  • You are in good health
  • You lead a safe sexual lifestyle
  • You love helping others

Blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to another person – the gift of life. A decision to donate your blood can save a life, or even several. If you have any more questions, you can comment down below.
