How to give yourself a makeover

How to give yourself a makeover

As any choma knows, when you don’t look great, you don’t feel great.  Sometimes the easiest way to give yourself a confidence boost, is with a new ‘do, a splash of colour on those nails and a walk that says ‘’I’ve arrived.” Follow our easy steps to giving yourself a makeover on a budget.

Pluck those eyebrows.

Eyebrows are very underrated but creating a beautiful shape can do wonders for your face and really bring out your eyes.  Don’t go overboard with tweezers. Simply take a pencil and hold it against your face, parallel to the side of the bridge of your nose. That’s where your eyebrows should start so pluck any stray hairs that are outside of the line (no-one likes a unibrow chomas).  Look at yourself in the mirror. The highest part of your eyebrow is your arch - pluck beneath the arch to create a nice shape. Remember – go slowly. Gently fill in any patches with a dark eye shadow or pencil and use an eyebrow gel or comb to keep unruly hairs in place.  Check out the Essence range at Dis-Chem for affordable tools of the trade.

Give your hands some me-time.

Your paws are often overlooked but when they look good you feel invincible. Give yourself a simple DIY manicure. Start by filing your nails and scrubbing them with a nail brush. Soak your nails in warm water with a bit of face wash for a couple of minutes. Reach for the moisturiser and push your cuticles down, clipping any out-of-control cuticles. Use a base coat or clear nail polish to give you nails a glossy glow. If you’re not in school, add a layer of colour and then a top coat, remembering to let each layer dry first.  Ta-da!

Mix up your ‘do.

Your hair is your crowning glory and can make you feel fab or drab, depending on its condition.  Simple hairstyle changes include a hairpiece or extensions, working the braids or rocking natural with a fierce accessory like a headband.  Just changing your parting or adding a fringe can make you feel like a new person.

Don’t forget to smell nice.

You don’t need to spend hundreds on designer fragrances but you need to float on a cloud of something delicious. Here’s how:

  • Add essential oils to your bath or your body lotion
  • Apply a scented lotion after your shower or bath
  • Reach for the body spray. We love the Lentheric range from Clicks.
  • Believe it or not, a splash of Johnson’s baby cologne on your neck and wrists will get compliments every time.

Stand up straight.

It costs you nothing but a good posture is ridiculously attractive and oozes confidence. Just watch how people respond to you when you walk tall, look at them in the eye and smile.
