Self Service: Masturbation is not a dirty word
Masturbation isn’t something that you would hear others talk about very often. It’s a bit of a touchy subject and not everyone agrees when it comes to deciding whether it is ‘good’ or ‘bad’.
What is masturbation?
Why is masturbation so hard to talk about, especially amongst women and girls? Even though it’s a perfectly natural thing, people are still ashamed to talk about it. So what is masturbation? Simply put, masturbation is touching your genitals (vagina or penis) in a way that you find pleasing.
When do people start masturbating?
Masturbation usually starts to happen when you’re going through puberty and start to experience sexual feelings. However, this can happen at different times in different people’s lives. No matter when it happens, at some point we all become sexually curious and begin to learn that we actually can please ourselves.
Myths about masturbation
Okay, now let’s get the myths out of the way. Firstly, masturbating will not make your go blind, will not make your fingers or private parts fall off and will certainly not make you go mad.
Secondly, masturbation is not harmful to your body (As long as you don’t use objects inside your vagina or against your penis), and thirdly, masturbation is not likely to ruin your sex life.
It’s really a good way to get to know your body, especially as you become more sexual.
Why masturbation is good for you
Masturbation is actually a healthy alternative to sexual intercourse. Say you’re not ready to have sexual intercourse or you’re in position where you’re not able to (long distance relationship perhaps or no sexual partner), masturbation is an option.
Masturbation is also a safe way to experience sexual pleasure, you don’t have to worry about STIs including HIV or pregnancy.
If you’re wondering if it’s possible to masturbate too much, well, that depends on whether it affects other areas of your life. Masturbation should be a healthy part of your sexual expression, meaning that you should be able to do it in private without feeling ashamed. However, it should not affect your school work or your social life where you feel like you need to do it all the time. But that goes for anything – you should be aware of when you’re overdoing anything, because that could be unhealthy.
Also, growing doesn’t mean that you have to masturbate. Remember that you’re in control of your body, always.
