How to practise self-care over the holidays
Exams are almost over, schools will be closed soon and you’ll be in holiday mode. That’s something to look forward to. But in between spending time with your loved ones and enjoying the festive activities, it’s important that you remember to keep up with your routine so that you don’t burn out. Here are a couple of ideas to get you started.
Take care of your health
Your health is valuable so it’s important to make sure you stay healthy over the summer break. It’s okay to enjoy holiday treats but remember to eat fresh fruits and vegetables too. If you’re living with a chronic illness like HIV or diabetes, make sure that you remember to take your medication daily! You don’t want to neglect all your healthy habits over this short season.
Remember to rest
Summer break is just that, a break from all the assignments, tests and exam stress. Sleep as much as you can but don’t over do it. Remember to rest your mind as well. Take some time out to do mindfulness exercises, they’re great for relaxing and unwinding.
Take care of your mind
Doing something different and new can be quite therapeutic. Your brain actually lights up whenever you engage your creative side. It also means that your body likes it when you do things that you enjoy and find interesting. Get up every now and then and take a walk, read a book, do some writing or dance. Try to do any activity that you enjoy at least three times a week.
Take stock of your achievements
Summer break is a great time to reflect on the year that has passed. When you reflect, it’s important to take stock of all your achievements, no matter how small they may be. Give yourself credit for working hard. If there are things you didn’t do so well, forgive yourself and remember that next year is another opportunity to try again.
Practise safe sex
Safe sex habits form part of any good self-care routine, so don’t skip on this one. If you’re going to spend some time with bae over the holiday, just remember to always have condoms with you in case things get heated.
Self-care is really important and should be taken seriously. So while you’re planning how you’re going to spend your holidays, slot in these self-care habits. Happy holidays and remember to prioritise your safety and well-being during this time!
