Choma Queens: Women who are fighting gender equality

Girls and women around the world are affected by serious social injustices, which makes the fight against gender inequality so necessary. Here are four women who are actively involved in fighting gender injustice.

Melene Rossouw

Melene provides girls and women with skills and resources that they can use in their daily lives through her non-profit organization, the Women Lead Movement. She hopes that through education and access to resources, girls and women will feel empowered to make changes they can see within their individual communities.

Lola Omolola

Lola created a private Facebook account for the women of Nigeria, where they can safely share their untold sexual abuse stories along with other social challenges they face. Her platform offers women a space for healing and support, which they may not have in their community.

Aya Chebbi

Aya is done with silence when it comes to gender issues that aren’t addressed by people in positions of leadership. She joined a group of women who stood up by signing a letter (petition) that urged leaders to start putting real and observable action behind their promises. She’s also a social justice activist and founder of Afrika Youth Movement.

Refilwe Ledwaba

Refilwe believes that gender stereotypes and limited access to quality education have made it really difficult for young girls to compete in male dominated fields like aviation. She used her passion and love for flying to start a foundation that gives training and mentorship to girls who want to pursue a career in the field.

There you have it. Four women who aren’t afraid to stand against tired gender stereotypes and discrimination. I hope that they’ve inspired you to use your voice, skills and resources to fight for gender equality in your own way.
