Choma Queens: Women’s rights activists

The world we live in often ignores or disrespects women’s rights in a lot of ways. Which is why it’s important for us to find ways to protect and promote awareness about our rights. Here are three inspirational women who are passionate about women’s rights.

Aranya Johar

Aranya is a young creative who’s made waves in 2019 for using poetry to speak out about gender discrimination, sexuality and advocate for girls’ access to quality education. Her poetry sheds light on the dominant patriarchal issues (problems created from a  societal system in favour of men)  the women of her community face daily. She’s the youngest member of the gender equality advisory, G7, which is a council that was created to bring 7 economically strong countries together every year, to find ways to close the inequality gap between women and men.

Shamillah Wilson

Shamilla believes that women have the right to be interested in different spheres of life, including entrepreneurship. Her feminist beliefs have driven her to pursue a career in the sexual reproductive health field. She also uses her career expertise and resources to help young women explore opportunities that will help them reach their potential.

Zawadi Ny’ongo

Zawadi uses the power of social media to create meaningful social change. As a digital social media strategist, she’s been able to use her knowledge and resources to design online campaigns that help to give a stronger voice to women’s issues such as sexual reproductive rights.

These women show us that women’s rights activism can be done in a variety of ways and that it’s important to stand up for what you believe in. Remember, when you educate yourself about gender issues you’ll be able to find solutions and make a difference with the resources you have – even if it’s just in your family.
