Condoms are the only contraceptive method that protects you from Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), including Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). So, it’s really important that you know how to use condoms the right way. Take a look at these condom do’s and don’ts.

Don’t: Use two condoms at the same time

Using more than one condom during sex is a really bad idea. To be honest, using two condoms at the same time doesn’t give you and your partner extra protection. Instead, two condoms will cause friction and break the condoms.

Do: Use one condom at a time

Don’t: Use old and damaged condoms

Never use old or expired condoms. Damaged condoms are risky because they’re not reliable. Keep in mind that if you decide to use a damaged condom, it is more likely to break and increase your chances of falling pregnant and contracting STIs.

Do: Use condoms in good condition

Make sure that each condom is wrapped and sealed tightly. Check if the condom has not gone past its expiration date. Avoid using damaged, leaky and sticky condoms.

Don’t: place your condoms just anywhere

It may look really cool to place your condom in your back pocket, wallet/purse or in a decorative bowl, but direct heat, hard surfaces and even sharp objects can damage your condoms and cause them to break.

Do: Be careful where you place them

Make sure that you place your condoms in a cool, dry place. Preferably on soft surfaces. You can keep your condoms in a side compartment of your backpack. Just make sure to keep them away from objects such as pens or pencils, and don’t crush them under heavy books

Don’t: Dispose of used condoms in the toilet or drain

Flushing your condom in the toilet’s a really bad idea. It can block your toilet or even land on public beaches.

Do: Dispose the right way

The best way to dispose of your used condom is by wrapping it up in tissue or toilet paper and throwing it away in the bin.

Don’t: Use oil-based lubricants

Oil based lubricants aren’t the best to use. Lotions or creams, vaseline and spit are also not good to use as lubricant when your condom goes dry because they can damage the condom and even cause genital irritation.

Do: Use the right lubricants

It’s better to use water or silicone-based lubricants as they are more effective and don’t damage the condom. You can find these at your nearest pharmacy and some supermarkets.

It’s really important that you use condoms every time you have sex. Remember that the responsibility to learn more about condoms and sex, doesn’t only lie with you – your partner should also be involved. Speak to them about making sex more enjoyable and safe for the both of you.
