Handling end of year anxiety

The end of the year can be a very stressful time, especially if you didn’t get to achieve some of your goals. It’s normal for people to feel fatigued, anxious and even a bit sad towards the end of the year, but this doesn’t have to ruin your holiday season. Here’s how to handle it.

Try to find the cause

Think about what the root of your feelings of anxiety could be. Are you stressing about your marks? Did you hope to do better in school? Could it be the stress of finding a job? When we’re able to point out exactly what’s making us feel unsettled, we can come up with a plan of action and possible solutions.

What’s your plan of action?

While this year has taught us that life can be unpredictable, it’s not a bad idea to still make plans for your future. Once you know why you’ve been feeling anxious, think about all the  things you can do to solve the problem and draw up a realistic plan of action. Your plan of action should take into account things that you can do immediately (for example, sorting out your CV or finding a tutor) and more long-term actions. This will help you feel like you’re more in control of your situation and give you a better view of things.

Appreciate your milestones

I know that there are a lot of things you were not able to do and it’s difficult to ignore this. However, it’s always good to shift your focus from the things you couldn’t do, to the things that you have achieved. Give yourself a pat on the back for even the smallest milestones and let that encourage you to keep going, Choma.

Don’t be too hard on yourself

The pressure to end the year off with something to show for it is not healthy, and it can make you set unrealistic goals. This year has been really different. It’s important not to be too hard on yourself because sometimes circumstances won’t allow you to do what you set out to achieve. Some things are really out of your control and that’s okay.

It’s normal to look back at the year and reflect on everything that has happened. Don’t forget to look back at the positive things, just as much as you might think about the negative. Breathe and enjoy the holiday season, knowing that next year is still a chance for you to achieve your goals. A little delay doesn’t mean that you’ve failed.
