How to celebrate your matric year during a pandemic

When schools physically closed due to the pandemic, educators, families, and students had to get creative about graduations and year-end celebrations. From local car parades to social media yearbooks and virtually broadcast graduation events, we found ways to recognise our accomplishments. Here are a few ways you can celebrate your matric year while living in a pandemic.

Organise a photoshoot

Get together with friends to hire a professional photographer and organise a socially distant photo shoot. You can dress up with your friends and create fun filled snaps that can be themed as well. Don’t forget to wear a mask, Choma.

Plan a themed dinner

Prepare your favourite meal and have a few relatives or friends dress up for the occasion. This way you can still slay your matric farewell outfit in the comfort of your home, while being safe.

Organise a virtual party

You can still bring all the important people in your life together in a way that follows social distancing. Send a festive virtual invitation with a meeting ID or link (you can use Zoom or WhatsApp). Encourage guests to wear themed attire and have decorations in their background to achieve the ultimate matric farewell vibe.

Make a video

Have friends and family submit short videos full of well wishes for your final year. You can get creative by editing them all together. This way you’ll always have these memories to look back on.

Your final year may not look the way you’d planned, but with a little creativity, you can honour your accomplishments. Bring together the important people in your life and focus on celebrating. Congratulations, Class of 2021!

Remember to follow COVID-19 protocols when hosting people. You should still take steps to protect yourself and others by wearing a mask, social distancing, and sanitising.
