As 2021 comes to an end, many of us may be experiencing what’s known as year-end fatigue. It’s normal, and even the most hardworking people experience it. The rush to wrap up work, school and other life commitments before the end-of-year can be quite exhausting. Here’s more.
What’s year-end fatigue?
Towards the end of the year, you’ll notice that it’s more difficult to get out of bed every morning. You may find yourself losing motivation to complete everyday tasks and stick to your daily routine.
How do I know if I’m experiencing it?
There are a few changes in your behaviour that can indicate you may be experiencing year-end fatigue. These can include:
Lack of concentration
Forgetfulness
Boredom
Insomnia
Tiredness
How to overcome it
If you’re struggling during this final stretch, here are some suggestions:
Drink plenty of water – Sometimes you feel tired because you’re dehydrated. A glass of water will help do the trick, especially after exercise.
Be careful with caffeine – You should also try to cut down on your caffeine consumption. This includes reducing the amount of coffee, tea, energy and cola drinks you consume each day.
Eat breakfast – Food boosts your metabolism and gives the body energy to burn. Try to eat cereals or wholegrain bread in the morning for an energy boost.
Eat iron rich foods – Women, in particular, are prone to iron-deficiency (anaemia), which can lead to feeling fatigued. Make sure your diet includes iron-rich foods such as lean red meat, spinach, peas or broccoli. You can also try vitamin supplements.
Get rest– Even though it might feel like you need 10 years of sleep at this point, a good 8 hours of sleep should be enough. Make time in your schedule to rest. It’s okay to have a lazy day, where you do absolutely nothing. You deserve it.
It’s important to slow down and change your rhythm when you approach the end of the year. Check in with yourself throughout the day and stay in touch with your mental health. Although the festive period is a time to celebrate and spend time with family and friends, it’s important to also take time to recharge your body.
