How to Spot Love Bombing in Relationships: A Guide for Chomas

Relationships can be exciting, especially when someone showers you with affection, gifts, and sweet messages. But not all attention is healthy, and sometimes, what feels like love can actually be a red flag. Let’s talk about love bombing—a manipulative tactic that can leave you feeling overwhelmed and confused.

What Is Love Bombing?

Love bombing is when someone gives you excessive affection, compliments, and attention to win you over quickly. It might seem amazing at first, but it’s often used to create dependency and control in a relationship.

How to Spot Love Bombing

Here are some signs to look out for:

  1. Too Much, Too Soon “I love you” on the first date? Talking about marriage or calling you their soulmate after a week? While it’s normal to be excited, moving too fast can be a sign of love bombing.
  2. Constant Communication Are they texting you non-stop, demanding replies, or getting upset if you take time to yourself? Healthy relationships give you space.
  3. Over-the-Top Gifts Expensive or excessive gifts early in the relationship might feel flattering, but they could also be a way to make you feel indebted.
  4. They Want All Your Time A love bomber might try to isolate you from friends and family, making you feel guilty for spending time with others.
  5. Overwhelming Compliments Compliments are great, but if they’re overloading you with flattery to gain your trust quickly, it could be manipulative.
  6. Sudden Mood Swings One moment they’re adoring and attentive, and the next, they’re distant or angry. This can leave you feeling confused and walking on eggshells.

Why Do People Love Bomb?

Love bombing is often about control. Once they’ve gained your trust, they might start showing controlling behaviors, like telling you what to wear, who to talk to, or how to spend your time.

What Should You Do?

  • Set Boundaries: If someone’s behavior feels overwhelming, let them know what you’re comfortable with.
  • Take Your Time: Healthy relationships build gradually. Don’t rush into anything you’re unsure about.
  • Talk to Someone You Trust: Share your concerns with a friend, family member, or counselor.
  • Watch for Patterns: If the love bombing turns into control, manipulation, or emotional abuse, it’s time to rethink the relationship.

Remember, Choma:

Real love is about mutual respect, trust, and care. It doesn’t feel rushed, overwhelming, or one-sided. If you feel unsure about someone’s intentions, listen to your gut. You deserve a relationship that makes you feel safe, valued, and respected.

Stay safe, Choma! And if you’re ever in doubt, we’re here to help you through it.
