Is my vagina normal?

There’s no such thing as a “normal” looking vagina, Choma. Vaginas are as unique as faces- they all have the same parts, but everyone’s looks a little different. All the different parts that make up the vagina come in different shapes, colours, and sizes. Here’s more.

Shapes

When people refer to the vagina, they usually mean the visible, external part of the genitals. The proper term for this area, is called the vulva. The vulva includes many structures, such as the labia and inner and outer lips. These are folds of skin that surround the vaginal opening. Depending on the size and shape of the external structures, the appearance of the vulva can differ from person to person.

Inside the vagina

The inside of the vagina, known as the cervix, is like a long tube that can expand and contract. The cervix can seem wider or looser after childbirth. This is because the vaginal tissues expand to make room for a baby to pass down the birth canal. The vagina may return to its pre-pregnancy size, or it may remain slightly widened which is normal and you shouldn’t let anyone make you feel ashamed about it.

Size

The vagina also comes in different sizes. The outside (vulva) and inside (cervix) can change in size, or length, to accommodate a tampon for example, or a penis during intercourse.

Colour

Our skin colours naturally vary, including the skin of the vagina. It’s normal for both your inner and outer lips to be darker than the surrounding skin, and it’s also normal for your labia to gradually get darker with the hormonal changes that come with puberty, pregnancy, or ageing. Your vagina may be a few shades darker than your skin tone, Choma and that’s normal. You shouldn’t feel pressured to change anything about it.

Don’t let anyone tell you that your vagina isn’t tight or wet enough for sexual intercourse. I also DON’T recommend looking for ways to lighten your vagina, as this can cause vulva and vaginal irritation, swelling, burning, inflammation, and infections.

Despite what you may find on the internet, there’s no perfect image of how a vagina should look. Each vagina is unique and specific to every person. Remember that the best way to take care of your vagina is by practising good feminine hygiene.
