How to make friends at a new school

Unless you’re starting grade 8 in a new school where most of the learners in your grade are just as nervous, new and excited for high school, starting over and making friends may not be easy- especially if you’re shy. But don’t worry, chances are there are students at your school who are just as nervous as you and they also don’t know where to start making a new friend, so here’s my advice on how you can make friends at a new school.

Be friendly

Many people say that a smile is the most beautiful “outfit” that you can wear, and not only does it make you look happy and confident- you also appear to be friendly to the next person.

So, give your schoolmates a genuinely warm smile so that you’re more approachable and they will know that you’re ready to interact with them.

Start a conversation

Starting a conversation with someone you’re not used to is not an easy thing to do because you don’t know how they will react. So, the first thing you can do is to say hi and ask them how their day is going. Chances are, a conversation might spark and that may be a journey to a new and fruitful friendship.

Give a compliment

Giving someone a compliment may be the one thing they needed to brighten up their day. Not only that, but it’s also a good way to break the ice and start a conversation – which could lead to a friendship.

Find someone who is alone

As much as you’re looking for a friend or a crew to join, sometimes it’s easier to approach someone who is alone as compared to a group. Chances are, they might be in the same situation as you and you may be helping them get over their social anxiety or shyness.

Look for common interests

When people have certain things in common, it’s easier for them to get along and they tend to open up about things that they’re passionate about. Now, imagine having a friend that has the same taste in music as you – wouldn’t that be great?

Everybody needs a friend so that their time at school can be fun, bearable and memorable. If you happen to see a new student or someone who is always alone, be nice to them and try to be their friend. You’ll never know the impact of your kindness in their life. So, don’t be afraid to spread some love and kindness to those around you.
