Things that every LGBTQIA teen should know

Being part of the LGBTQIA  (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual) community as a teen can be challenging when you don’t have a solid support system, and because homosexuality is still frowned upon by a lot of people in society. You may feel misunderstood and lonely but I want you to know that you’re not alone ancd there is absolutely nothing you need to be ashamed of. Here are more things you should know.

You’re worthy

The only thing that should make you feel different is your unique personalty. Your sexuality may be different to others, but it doesn’t make you weird or less than anyone else. Being heterosexual (or straight) is only one type of sexuality but it’s not the only “right” sexuality. We live in a world that is so diverse, from race and culture to sexuality. None of them are wrong – they are all beautiful. People not understanding who you are doesn’t mean that you’re not normal. You’re worthy of living a full and beautiful life just as you are.

You can take your time

When it comes to figuring stuff out about your sexuality, you should take as much time as you want. You don’t have to figure everything out immediately and it’s okay not to be sure about certain things. You also shouldn’t feel pressured to come out to anybody because it is your own race, so you should pick your own pace.

You should be kind to yourself

Most of the time, especially as a teen- you might be told that you have to be patient, understanding and forgiving to those who don’t understand your sexuality- but you’re not told to return the same kindness to yourself because you deserve to be loved and treated right.

Being part of the LGBTQIA community is not something to be ashamed of, instead – you should be proud of who you are and stand for what you believe in.

You deserve love, life and happiness just like anyone else. Don’t let anyone try to bring you down. There’s also no need for you to be afraid of reaching out and asking for help when you need it. There are people out there going through the same thing you’re going through, so don’t feel like you’re alone in the world.

Speak to people you can trust and who understand. Find out if there are any support groups in your community. You can also check for support groups online – there are a few websites that offer advice, such as OUT wellbeing. You can always speak to a family member, a friend or community leader that you trust.

If you need someone to talk to, you can also speak to me for advice or help here on Ask Choma, send me a Facebook Message, a Twitter DM, or a WhatsApp Message (071 172 3657).
