What are safe spaces and why do we need them?

With the rise of gender-based violence, LGBTQIA hate crimes and other forms of violent discrimination, it’s really important for us to have spaces where we feel safe. While safe spaces won’t really end these social injustices, they can provide places that allow people to be themselves without fear or judgement. Take a look below to learn more about safe spaces.

What are safe spaces?

Safe spaces are places that make those who are discriminated against feel accepted, understood, and safe. They’re not necessarily a physical place, but they can be a group of people or community or even an organisation that brings together people who share the same struggles and values. It’s a platform where people can come together without shame.

Why do we need them?

Safe spaces are needed because they allow marginalised groups like women and the LGBTQIA community to have places where they can express themselves. In today’s society where there’s an increased number of gender-based violence cases and hate crimes, there is a need for these spaces so that people can reach out for help and support.

To ensure that safe spaces continue to exist and fulfil their purpose, it’s important for us to support them and those who are being discriminated against or abused. In order for our communities to be safe spaces for everyone, we all need to stand up for each other and make sure that we don’t discriminate or become insensitive to one another’s suffering. Working together we can help make our communities safe spaces for everyone.
