4 benefits of proper handwashing

Proper handwashing remains the most effective way of removing germs and harmful bacteria from our hands. This prevents the spread of diseases and keeps us safe and clean. We’re always surrounded by germs so it’s important to get in the habit of regularly washing your hands with soap and water or using a good alcohol-based sanitiser, especially now during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are 4 benefits of proper handwashing.

Encourages an environment of cleanliness

Encouraging ourselves and those around us to get in the habit of washing our hands regularly can eliminate or even prevent the spread of illnesses. Remember to keep your hands clean and germ-free throughout the day.

Reduction of the bacteria

Bacteria linger on our hands and the objects we touch, which can cause infections (such as COVID-19) when we touch our eyes, noses and/or mouths. This is why we should get into the habit of sanitising our hands frequently, and before and after entry or use of public facilities, such as taxis, public bathrooms and shops.

Prevention of intestinal diseases

Most food-borne illnesses are a result of improper hand washing. This doesn’t happen in restaurants only, but also at home or anywhere else where food is prepared, especially for large numbers of people. To minimise the risk of illness, it’s imperative to wash your hands before and after preparing a meal. Don’t forget to wash underneath your nails too.

Prevents respiratory infections

The most effective way to prevent getting a cold or the flu is to wash your hands. Regular washing of the hands with soap, can remove the germs that cause colds and the flu easily. We can prevent viruses such as COVID-19, the flu or cold, by simply covering our mouths when we cough or sneeze and washing our hands immediately.

Knowing the benefits of proper handwashing is good motivation for all of us to adopt good hygiene habits and prevent the spread of bacteria causing infections. Handwashing is an easily forgotten practice but it’s important to include this in your daily routine. If you don’t have access to soap and water throughout the day, you can still keep your hands clean by using an alcohol-based sanitiser.
