Being in a relationship can be a lot of fun but it also requires joint effort to make it work. The one mistake many people make is depending on their relationships to fulfill them. If you’re in a relationship or considering getting into one, here are 6 things you should know.
You’re still an individual
Before you met your partner, you had your own life, and friends. That shouldn’t change once you get in a relationship. Embracing your individuality means having your own life, goals, and ambitions outside of your relationship. For example, you and your partner should be able to hang out with other people without the other feeling neglected or rejected.
You should still priorities yourself
Accepting and loving yourself should always be a priority before you get in a relationship. It’s completely normal to want to do things for your partner and go out of your way for them. Just don’t do it at the expense of your mental health, your confidence or your comfort. Yes caring for someone is part of a healthy relationship but doing things for them to the point that you neglect yourself is not healthy.
You create your own happiness
A lot of people get into relationships to find happiness, and you might want to change that if you are one of those people. A relationship should add to your happiness, so instead of wanting someone to make you happy, try to make yourself happy first – then your partner’s role will be to add on to that happiness (and to not take away from that happiness).
Consent is important
Being in a relationship doesn’t mean you’re entitled to your partner. Yes, you might be together for 3 years but you still need their consent when it comes to things like sex. If you don’t know how to ask for consent, you can read this article to learn how.
Know your status
Knowing your status when you’re in a relationship doesn’t mean you’re unfaithful or that there’s anything wrong with you. Knowing your status is a form of self-care and it puts you in a better position to take care of your health – regardless of what your status is. Knowledge gives you the power to be in control of your life – and it’s your responsibility if you’re sexually active.
Know your worth
Knowing your worth shouldn’t be limited to when you’re single. You should always know your worth, even after getting into a relationship. Knowing your worth is like setting a standard for how other people – including your partner- should treat you.
Every relationship is different and unique. It is, however, important to be in the right space when you get into a relationship so you and your partner can have a healthy relationship without compromising yourself, as an individual.
