It is characterized by having constant feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and withdrawal from activities that were once found enjoyable. It’s normal to feel sad or down from time to time, however, if these feelings have been going on for some time and have significantly interfered with one’s quality of life and daily activities, it can be a cause for concern. - One’s personality – some people may be more at risk because of their personality, particularly if they have excessive feelings of worry, low self-esteem, tend to be perfectionists and are sensitive to criticism.
- Serious medical conditions – serious medical conditions can trigger depression in two ways, serious conditions can bring about depression directly or can contribute to depression through the associated stress and worry, especially if it involves long-term management of a condition or chronic pain.
- Drug and alcohol use – they can both lead to and result from depression. Many people with depression abuse drugs and alcohol.
