Signs of a miscarriage: When to worry

Miscarriage is the unexpected loss of a pregnancy that can happen suddenly or over several weeks. There are many causes of a miscarriage, and although the signs and symptoms can vary from person to person, here are a few warning signs.

Heavy spotting/vaginal bleeding

Spotting is normal during pregnancy; however, heavy spotting is a concern. Bleeding from a miscarriage may also contain large clots and tissue. It’s advisable to see your healthcare provider if you’re experiencing heavy spotting/vaginal bleeding.

Abdominal pains or cramps

Severe abdominal pains and cramps during pregnancy are also warning signs and should be checked out by a healthcare provider.

Mild to severe back pain

Back pain can occur in both early and late miscarriage. However, it’s also possible to experience back pain throughout pregnancy without it relating to a miscarriage, as it’s a normal side-effect of carrying a growing foetus in the womb. Intense pain should be checked out by a healthcare provider.

Other symptoms of a miscarriage include:

Severe cramping and pain in your lower abdomen.

A discharge of abnormal fluid from your vagina.

A discharge of tissue from your vagina.

No longer experiencing the symptoms of pregnancy, such as feeling sick and breast tenderness.

Prevention

There are ways to lower your risk of miscarriage, including:

Not smoking during pregnancy.

Not drinking alcohol or using and abusing drugs (illegal or prescription) during pregnancy.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet and physical activity.

If you experience any of the symptoms above, visit your nearest local clinic as soon as possible. A miscarriage can be physically painful, and it may also cause a variety of emotions. While your body may recover in a few weeks, be sure to take time to process your feelings, grieve, and reach out for help when you need it.
