What is porn addiction?

Porn addiction is a lot more common than you might think. It can be difficult to admit that you’re addicted to porn but there’s no need to be ashamed. While satisfying yourself sexually is not a problem, porn addiction is, and it can get in the way of your sex life in the long run. Here’s more.

What exactly is porn addiction?

Porn addiction is an intense and uncontrollable desire to watch porn all the time. People who are addicted to porn constantly think about it and are always looking for opportunities to watch it. This problem often gets in the way of their sex life and may create  unrealistic sexual expectations for their partners. Just like with any other addictions, your loved ones tend to be negatively affected.

Signs of porn addiction

The most obvious symptom of porn addiction (or any other addiction, for that matter) is being unable to stop yourself from watching it, no matter how hard you try. You may find that you’re hooked on watching it and constantly want more of it. This can lead to watching porn in inappropriate times and places, and feeling as though you’re losing a lot of time watching it.

Other signs include losing interest in real sex and feeling as though your partner no longer satisfies you sexually, but porn does. You may find that your expectations around sex and sexuality become unrealistic, making your partner feel uneasy.

Causes of porn addiction

Researchers have not yet found a clear cause of porn addiction but many say it may be related to how some people cope with symptoms of an undiagnosed mental conditions, trauma or relationship problems. This differs from person to person and can be dealt with through therapy.

Treatment

There’s no specific treatment for porn addiction. Mental health practitioners try assisting addicts through talk therapy and other methods, which depend on the individual’s needs. The best way to deal with it would be to speak to a mental healthcare practitioner or contact an organisation like SADAG for help.

There’s nothing wrong with watching a bit of porn occasionally, but when it starts to become uncontrollable, then you might need to seek help. Remember, porn addiction is like any other addiction and can be treated with some intervention. Don’t allow shame and guilt to keep you from getting the help you need if you’re struggling with this.
